WORLD OF WINE - Grand Tour of Italy
PART 1 - Italy can be the most confusing wine country to get to know, with its enormous diversity of wine styles, often from the same town! Grapes like Falanghina, Fiano, Greco, Vermentino and Verdicchio to name a few, don’t help the cause! It is, however, worth spending a little time to understand it, with the discoveries amply repaying the effort involved.
Italian whites have rightly become one of the biggest success stories of the wine world over the last few years as a new wave of growers has put back the flavour and regained confidence in the local varieties which were always best suited to the local conditions.
Italy, with its climate and local conditions, makes it, in many ways the ideal grape growing factory. This, coupled with a winemaking tradition that goes back thousands of years and the amount of grape varieties, means that there is always something for everyone. From the cool, Alpine climate of the north, where the Nebbiolo of Borolo and Barbaresco, Valpolicella and Soave have achieved fame, through the central region where Chiant Classico roams to the baking heat of the far south where Nero d'Avola is at home in Sicily, Italy has a variety of climatic conditions and soil types that are capable of a huge diversity of agriculture.
So join us as we travel through the very different and fabulous wine regions where you will experience first hand, the amazing range of grape varieties and flavours that Italy has to offer. You will taste some classic Italian wines, along with some new-wave wines from really cutting-edge winemakers.
