WORLD OF WINE - Explore Chile & Argentina
PART 1 - Chile, a viticultural paradise with hot, sunny days, chilly nights, little rain and cooling breezes, Chile is famous for being the only wine-producing country free of the devastating phylloxera bug. It is South America's, and probably, the worlds finest source of well-priced, excellent quality varietal wines with sleek, fruity reds and ripe, clean whites. As winemaking techniques and the search for better sites improves, some truly fine wines are beginning to emerge.
A long and narrow country, only 100 miles wide, and bordered by the cool Pacific on one side and the Andes on the other, it is home to a wide range of terroirs, making it a winegrower's paradise. The is a diverse range of wine styles from the crisp, grassy Sauvignon Blanc of the Casablanca and Elqui valleys to the elegant, age-worthy Bordeaux type Blends from Maipo Valley and Colchagua. From Chiles signature Carmenere to the ultra drinkable Merlots.
Argentina, with its winemaking roots reaching back to the 1500′s, has a fascinating history of adaptation, innovation, and improbable progress given the ups and downs of its political history. Malbec has been king here, but winemakers from this region are working hard to demonstrate that Argentina is no one-grape wonder.
We are beginning to see "full-blooded", seductive wines of spice and passion from Argentina now, and, like their neighbours across the Andes in Chile, they produce excellent value, mostly red but increasingly white, varietal wines across all price points.
Alongside Malbec, we are seeing the emergence of some very good Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, followed by Merlot, Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Pinot Noir and Barbera. White wines are on the rise too, with the most interesting coming from the fruity, floral Torrontés grape, but the there are some very fine wines from the ubiquitous Chardonnay, starting to really show just what the Argentineans are capable of.
Join us as we make our way up and down both sides of the Andes in search of some great wines at, more often than not, great prices. As we taste, we will discuss just how the regions have improved over the last 10 years, what the differences are in their wines, and what the future holds for this evolving region.
PART 2 - How Wine is Made. Ever wanted to know what all the fuss is about? As a winemaker with 20 years experience of making wine in various countries, you've come to the right place. This is your one stop shop for everything you ever wanted to know about how to make wine, and who knows, a change of career may be on the cards! From making wine at home to some of the 'secrets' to making some of the best wines in the world, we'll cover it all.
All tastings include; minimum of 6 wines sourced locally so you can find them easily if you like them, full tasting notes, tasting sheet, use of professional tastings glasses and nibbles.
