Glasgow Whisky Tasting
The Scottish spirit or the uisge beatha, the water of life, is a wonderful spirit with a charasmatic and absorbing past. The lengths and methods a distiller pursues incorporating the long-maturation periods (10, 12, 15, 18 years old etc) defines whisky, especially single malt whisky, as a high and wonderful quality product. Where as some spirits have little flavour compounds (e.g. vodkas), others gain flavour from their distillation period (e.g. Cognacs) whilst others will gain additional flavour from maturation in oak casks. Malt Whisky gains flavour from both the distillation method and maturation producing a complex and flavoursome spirit. Truly one of a kind.
But it's not a simple as that. There is detailed variation throughout regional Scotland, from the fruity and elegant Speyside, to the peaty and smoky Islay and from the delicate Lowlands to the robust and spicy Highlands. Then there's Ireland, America and Canada too.
Here at the Glasgow Wine School, we like to do things a little differently, though, and this isn't one of your normal whisky tastings. We'll be tasting Whisky from £20 to £100 a bottle, and I'll be showing you just what makes whiskies different, and why some can be rather expensive.
To be able to do this tasting, we've teamed up with a local distillery producing a number of whiskies within the price points above, so that what we'll be tasting is down to the quality differences at the different price points.
This is a unique opportunity, and certainly not one to be missed.
In our whisky tastings you will:
- learn how to taste high-strength spirits through the art of 'cutting'
- learn the definitions of differing alcohol strengths, e.g. 'cask strength'
- Find out the enchanting history of Scotch Whisky, as well as how it is made
- taste from blended Scotch whisky to Single Malts, peat vs non peat, and what the role of the barrel can play in the final taste.
- learn an overview on the detailed production methods and maturation types/lengths for malt whisky
An exciting tasting designed as an introduction to possibly the world's greatest spirit. Enjoy!
