WORLD OF WINE - Discover USA & South Africa
PART 1 - The USA and South Africa have one thing in common. A very chequered history in the wine industry. Both have very different wine styles and philosophies, but one thing is for certain, both are producing some remarkable wines.
When we think of the USA, we think of California, Oregon and Washington. Zinfandel and Chardonnay. All produce some wonderful wines, but there is so much more coming out of this wine giant. The 4th largest producer in the world USA can boast that they produce wine in all 50 States are really coming to the party with their new wave winemakers producing some stunning Syrah, Riesling and Tempranillo to add to their world renowned Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs and Bordeaux type Blends.
South Africa, although with a wine industry that dates back 300 years, are the ‘new kids on the block’. Wines that have become synonymous with South Africa, such as Pinotage and Chenin Blanc started to re-appear on our shelves in the mid nineties and as time has gone on, the quality has improved exponentially.
With young winemakers desperate to prove their worth and setting off to foreign shore to learn the winemaking skills from the greatest wine regions of the world has come a tide of new wonderful wines and styles. Fresh, fruity and ripeSauvignon Blanc, complex, savoury Cabernet Sauvignon, chocolaty spicy Shiraz and citrusy Chardonnay have become the norm in a nation building its name in a massively competitive world.
PART 2 - Wine Faults. On this evening we will be discussing the major wine faults in wine. Some render the wines undrinkable, some are just visual. With the help of some aids, you will get a good understanding of how to identify the most common faults associated with wine as well as how they got there!
Join us as we compare and contrast these two countries with fine examples of their wines to help us out along this journey of discovery. From the 400 years of history, to the devastating setbacks and into the future. As well as being able to spot some common wine faults, it’s all in this tasting!!!
All tastings include; minimum of 6 wines sourced locally so you can find them easily if you like them, full tasting notes, tasting sheet, use of professional tastings glasses and nibbles.
